It is an new year and with a new year comes testing and checking your electrical system.
Inspecting your home on a regular basis and following good maintenance practices are the best way to protect your investment in your home or bunsiness.
You should make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order each year, it should be part of your new years tradition. Check every year and replace batteries each year whether the detector works or not and wipe around detectors.
It is also important to test each Gfci receptacle in your home or businesses. Gfci receptables are usually located in bathrooms , kitchen, basemets, outside and etc. You should plug something up and push the test button to make sure it turns what you plugged up to the gfci receptacle off. After you completed that just push reset on the gfci receptacle and what you plugged up should come back on. If your test fails please contact a licensed and insured electrical contractor.
The next test to peform is to turn on all your lights and turn on every thing that you would use on an daily base. Then you will go to your electrical panel and listen for any sizzling noises. Also feel if there is any heat coming from the electrical panel. If you feel any heat or hear any sizzling please contact a licensed and insured electrical contractor. If you have lights flickering or see any type of arc or sparks from any electrical source, call a Licensed and insured electrical contractor immediately. If you smell smoke or plastic burning also call your local fire department immediately. If you know which fuse or breaker controls the circuit affected turn the breaker off or remove the fuse. Remember it is better to have an electrician check your home when experiencing any of the above issues than to potentially have a fire.
